Twelve wins on the trott. Scunthorpe eliminated 5-4 on penalties to Boston Utd in the opposite semi final, things were looking good for Brackley Town as they faced Chorley on their way to a second Wembley play off final which could finally have earnt them a place in the National Vanarama next season after six previous play off attempts.

The first 10 mins were unsettled probably due to nerves from both sides with Brackley getting a few more opening runs on goal. As the first half hit 20 mins a deadlock remained with nerves turning into some fouling from both sides. In the 22nd, Brackley broke through into the Chorley half with a shot on goal which look threatening but was saved. Chorley had brought with them some vocal fans which may have helped them to absorb some of the early Brackley attempts to get ahead in the tense and increasingly deadlocked match. As the match approached half time and with the Chorley fans less vocal , Brackley were awarded a corner kick which was cleared off the line. One could not help feeling that as the players walked in for half time, Brackley could take the match with a bit more self belief.

A few minutes mins into the second half, Chorley earnt a free kick quite a distance out and which when taken went far off target. Brackley responded with a successful attack on goal from Newton who was through and only had to kick the ball home but was unable to engage in Brackley’s moment of great need. Some more fouling followed as frustration at the continued deadlock into the second half kicked in. As more time went on fears of a lottery penalty shootout started to emerge. Yesterday’s penalty shoot had put out higher placed Scunthorpe, Brackley did not want to risk the same happening to them if they continued to be unable to take the lead. With 23 mins to go a Brackley run and cross this time made contact with Newton’s boot but was not strong enough to stand any chance of going over the line. As the match remained goalless as more time went, the Chorley fans kept vocal as they sensed things could go in their favour if the deadlock remained. However, Brackley were having none of it as they stepped up the pressure in the final quarter hour of the match with two corner kicks and more attacks and pressure on the Chorley goal and a cross which finally went in erupting the 1860 crowd into a roar and song of BTFC. With finally achieving the one nil lead, all Brackley has to do was hold on for the awarded five mins extra time. When the whistle went, a fight broke out amongst the players which seemed to go on for a rages and the referee was far too slow in stopping. One suspects the Chorley players were poor losers which reflected itself in the unsporting behaviour and ill disciple of the referee we to control or end putting a bit of a blur on an otherwise excellent game.

Above- fighting breaks out amongst the players straight after the full time whistle is blown.
