A shock announcement came on the first match of the 24/25 season when Peter Winkleman announced he had sold his club to a successful consortium in Kuwait. Winkleman could have announced the decision earlier leaving supporters with season tickets they may not have purchased if given the news earlier.
Speculation exists amongst supporters as to why Winkleman has sold his club which took him two decades to create. The controversial and unpopular purchase of Wimbledon FC short cutted Milton Keynes into professional football but has left a foul taste in the mouth of many supporters. Winkleman at the birth of the club declared he was doing it for the community but as the two decades unfolded, it became clear to many that it was more about trying to maje money than for the MK community. As his hotel and surrounding mk stadium lease businesses made a profit, the club with inadequate results on the pitch failed to become the money spinning machine hoped for. The net result a decision to sell the club which makes it look like with disguised dwindling attendance that he is jumping the possible sinking ship he created. What would have happened if the Dons had ever got relegated from league division two to the non league under his watch? Speculation exists that all those MK stadium business leases allowed by the Council at the birth of the club
are contracted to be called in, if the club were forced into non league football. Winkleman claims that the sale will allow the club to progress as urgently needed more cash will be injected in from the Middle East. But Kuwait is not Man City’s Abu Dubi. If Kuwait is so financially powerful why was it so easily invaded by Sudam Hussain? The new Kuwait consortium
which has purchased the MK Dons claims to have the experience of owning and managing a successful Kuwait premiership club. But Kuwait is far from a successful football experienced nation with one appearance and qualification to the World Cup and a 139th ranking.
Only time will tell as to what is going to happen. A 2-1 home defeat to Bradford City in the opening match with the two Bradford goals going in, in the first five mins may be a pessimistic indication as to what might be in store.
